Job Summary
Working in partnership with the Program Director, the Medical Director provides strong clinical leadership for Program.

Reporting to the Executive Medical Director, the Medical Director assists with the development of clinical standards, Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI), patient safety, Continuing Medical Education (CME) and physician resource plans. Works with the Island Medical Program (IMP), the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria as required, and assists with research activity and academic development. The Medical Director participates wth the activities of the HAMAC as required.

Responsibilities include the following:

Ensures operational planning within the clinical Program that maintains a patient/client focused approach, and that anticipates and responds to shifts in services and changes in the health care system, in partnership with the Program Director.
Ensures that patient/client care activities are organized to ensure coordinated, efficient, cost effective and quality patient care outcomes within the Program, in conjunction with the Program Director.
Implements priority quality, satisfaction and system improvement initiatives, including utilization management systems within the Program.
Supports assigned elements of the physician resource plan to assure necessary and appropriate service continuity including recruitment, retention, deployment, performance standards and practice models.
In partnership with the Program Director, participates in allocating and monitoring financial targets.
Works in collaboration with other Medical Directors to ensure integration of services.
Supports the development, acquisition and diffusion of knowledge within the organization.
Monitors and is accountable for Program area compliance with ethical and legal requirements, accreditation standards and Provincial and Federal legislation and regulations.
Works with the medical staff organization and the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee on the promotion of medical standards, education and research. Assists with research and education initiatives and opportunities for partnerships.
Identifies emerging issues that could influence the delivery of care within. Monitors information on best practices and benchmarking within industry, regionally and nationally to support organizational decision-making.
Provides leadership to team members through mentoring, coaching and modeling key behaviours.
Works with the Island Medical Program (IMP) and partners with representatives of the University of BC (UBC) and the University of Victoria (UVIC).
Promotes and presents a positive image with community stakeholders and represents as media spokesperson for Department/Program issues.
Participates, as deemed appropriate, in the activities of the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee.


Qualifications - Education, Training and Experience
Medical Doctor with current, or eligibility for, registration with the B.C. College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Seven (7) years experience as a staff physician, preferably from within
A record of effective medical leadership is required, and experience in a medical administrative position is preferred
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to adapt readily to rapid and changing environment and respond with initiative.
Ability to interact professionally with various levels of personnel, both internally and externally.
Demonstrated clinical competence.
Indepth understanding of Health services and operations
