The Medicine/Oncology Department is a 42-bed unit, which is designated as a primary oncology unit. All rooms are single and private. Patients with medical diagnosis are assigned to this unit as well.

Nurses working on this unit receive special education for providing chemotherapy and symptom management for the patient with cancer. Safety in administering cancer agents is a priority. Nurses must complete a Chemotherapy 2-day workshop and receive a "Chemoprovider Card" recognized nationally by the Oncology Nursing Society prior to administering chemo agents. Special chemo order forms and double checks on all chemotherapeutic agents by a pharmacist and 2 nurses are steps taken to promote patient and staff safety.

Staffs are assisted in providing support for patients and families by an experienced oncology nurse case manager, and a social worker designated to care for oncology patients.

Clinical support is provided by OCN certified unit nurse manager and clinical educator and experienced clinical leaders on all shifts. Nurses receive credentialing in managing various central lines as most patients admitted to the floor use Hickman, Groshong, PICC lines or Port-a-Caths. The opportunity to attend educational Tumor Board Conferences with case presentations by NMC physicians is available twice a month for nursing and medical staff.

Education of patients and families is an important part of the nurse's duties. Specific materials are provided by the unit to meet patient educational needs.

A few nurses are certified in patient massage and provide this service to cancer or pulmonary patients for symptom management. Reduction in pain, anxiety and dyspnea has been noted in patients receiving this therapy.

Teamwork is emphasized on the unit. The staffing mix consists of a Unit Clerk, Certified Nursing Assistants or Nursing Technicians, and Licensed Practical Nurses as well as Registered Nurses. The designated nurse:patient ratio is 1: 5.
