Description
The Operating Room Surgical Technologist working in this position assures a safe and therapeutic environment for infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients undergoing surgical procedures. The C-Section Room Staff LVN/Certified Surgical Technician/Surgical Technician working in this position assures a safe and therapeutic environment for women undergoing surgical procedures. Responsible for implementing and evaluating care for assigned patients. Responsible for meeting AORN Standards of Practice for the Operating Room. Responsible for participating in care. Appropriately carries out scrub activities during procedures to ensure medical and surgical asepsis and safety of patient. Assists in cleaning of rooms between cases and at the end of the schedule. Assists in lifting and transporting patients, as needed. Assists in preparation of specimens, operation of equipment, and sterilization and/or disinfection of equipment. Assists in preparation and aftercare of equipment and supplies Maintains proper inventory on all instruments in department. Maintains supplies, i.e., Central Supply, Dietary, and paper goods, as needed. Accountable for maintaining and improving own job knowledge and skills. Works closely with professional and non-professional employees of the hospital, and with physicians, patients, and their families.
The Surgical Technologist performs a variety of technical duties to assist in preparing and caring for pre-operative patients. The tasks and responsibilities include:
Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
Prepares sterile instrument table.
Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients.
Transports patients to and from surgical suite.
Positions patient according to type of surgery.
Assists the surgical team in surgical procedures which may include passing instruments, sponges and sutures.
Maintains work area.
Gathers equipment for cleaning and sterilization.
Assists in the monitoring of the patient through the procedure.
Provides age and culturally appropriate care.
Orients and mentors new staff members.
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Qualifications
Job Qualifications include:
A. LVN; Current Texas licensure with State Board of Nurse Examiners or
B. CST/ST: Certification from accredited school for CST's or equivalent experience
C. High School graduate
D. Current BLS certification
E. Demonstrated current clinical competence, as outlined in the appropriate orientation checklist.
F. Demonstrated knowledge of surgical aseptic techniques
G. Maintains current clinical competence
